Overview

Fosters Freeze on Main Street in Barstow, California, is a classic slice of Americana, where the charm of an old-school ice cream parlor meets a nostalgic carnival-style menu. Located at 1580 Main St, this spot offers more than just frozen treats; it’s a destination for those craving a diverse, hearty selection ranging from crisp corn dogs and fried zucchini to substantial grilled cheese sandwiches and signature burgers like the Big Boss Cheeseburger and Patty Melt.

The experience here is rooted in comfort food culture, with an atmosphere that appeals broadly—from families looking for casual dining to travelers stopping by for a quick, satisfying meal break. The interior reflects a clean, welcoming space with a vintage vibe, complemented by efficient and courteous staff who clearly take pride in maintaining a spotless environment. Ample parking and a busy drive-thru attest to its popularity and steady foot traffic.

Ice cream at Fosters Freeze remains the star attraction. Known for their freshly made cones, patrons frequently rave about the half-and-half soft serve and the traditional dipped cones that transport you back to simpler times. While the chocolate dip might not please every palate, the quality of the ice cream and cone leaves a lasting impression. It’s this consistency in offering fresh, well-prepared treats that keep customers returning, even if there are occasional minor hiccups like the over-salted fries or a misunderstood drink order.

The menu strikes a balance between classic American fast food staples and unique house specialties. Favorites such as the Double Cheeseburger combo with bacon, the flavorful Chicken Fingers, and indulgent sides like Bacon Cheese Fries elevate the casual experience. Seasonal touches like chili and apple pie add depth to the offerings, giving patrons seasonal variety beyond the creamy desserts.

Fosters Freeze’s target audience is diverse, catering to families, road trippers, and locals alike. It provides a quick, satisfying meal with a side of nostalgia. The customer service shines, with staff demonstrating friendliness and responsiveness, enhancing the overall dining atmosphere. While some reviews note minor inconsistencies, the consistent praise for food quality, cleanliness, and atmosphere affirm Fosters Freeze as a trustworthy stop for comfort food and classic American ice cream delights.

I am a black man and I visited Foster Freeze on thursday, 8/21/25. The young man and young woman behind the counter were very courteous, polite, efficient, etc. The lobby was very clean, virtually spotless, and every table was very clean. I got the sense that this restaurant is well kept. I did not get a chance to look in the restroom because it was locked, and I didn't want to ask for the key simply because I just wanted to look in to see how it looked. The drive-thru was non-stop busy the whole time I sat there and ate two ice cream cones. I had a large half and half ice cream cone. I enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed the large half and half ice cream cone with a very fresh and crispy cone so much so that I went back and ordered a small vanilla cone dipped in chocolate. The chocolate had a peculiar taste and I could not eat it, so I peeled off the chocolate dip and ate the ice cream. Before I left, I went and told the young lady about the taste of the chocolate and she said she would taste it, and she offered me another ice cream cone to replace the one I bought, but I declined the offer and told her I was just merely letting her know about the taste of the chocolate. Although I only bought ice cream cones, I would recommend this restaurant based on my experience and I would just say to anyone to try it for themselves, because I almost decided not to go after reading all the negative reviews. I was very satisfied with my experience and I would certainly visit this restaurant again. The drive-thru was very busy and there were customers at three tables, including the one that I was sitting at, so it appears they must be doing something right. Thank you to the young man and young woman who helped me.

Normally, the food is top notch, and the presentation is good. It seems to me the Boss Burger was bigger at one time, but it's still a decent size. They fell a little short today. Considering how many times I frequent this establishment, it's rare that there is anything off. The Boss Burger is my go-to each time, and the chicken strip kids meal. I can split between a 3 - and 5 year old and they're good. Overall, if you're looking for fresh every time, this place hits the spot.

Beautiful Route 44 themed restaurant. Very clean inside and nice clean restrooms. Food is always good. Carnival style eating with corn dogs, hot dogs, deep fried burritos, sundaes. Plenty of parking. Great customer service.

I finally got a random stopping by this place while I was visiting Barstow and taking care of some business and I'm going to say I was actually very happy that I went there. C: Pictures included have a few outside and inside shots but they had a $7.99 Double cheeseburger deal, as well as a 2 for 1 deal out although it was probably limited by the time this gets posted, was very good. Foster's freeze was very much known back in the day for ice cream in the dipped cones were absolutely amazing I just as I remembered. The reason I get four stars is I think they may have misheard me when it came to the actual food that I ate first. I asked for no salt and no ice for the drink and instead got a lot of ice and I think extra salt because the fries were really bad with it! :0 I don't blame them I took care of the fries at least with the extra ice was a little annoying but I did want to at least post that up. Looking forward to at least getting some more ice cream next time c:

Great place. Had a group of four and got a variety of different desserts and shakes. All were delicious and everyone enjoyed. Plenty of parking and the drive through was busy.
